Dammit

My social life has been unusually… REALLY unusually active this weekend.

My brother’s party last night. I saw a movie with a group of people today and then saw a play. And tomorrow I’m hanging out with my guy friend (we’ll see how that turns out - I’m skeptical).

This would be all right except that I’m sick and my head hurts constantly because my sinuses are dead and my nose feels like it’s gone and my throat hurts and now I’m starting to cough.

If I feel crappy in the morning, I might call off those plans with my friend and sleep for days.

My brother’s 21st birthday party happened

And it was fun

There were people I like there.

And because he was turning 21, we all felt he was obliged to get at least somewhat drunk, so he did. With vodka, because you don’t get hungover on vodka. He made faces every time he took a sip because that shit tastes and smells like paint thinner.

He was noticeably tipsy after 2 glasses or so. I’ve always wondered what kind of a drunk he is. He, himself, was extremely curious to know how his piano skills would suffer while under the influence. (They suffered.) Aside from that, he was a rather goofy, somewhat cuddly drunk.

Basically, he became what I am while sober. I think my dad thought I had been drinking as well, but I was actually just really tired. I get cuddly when I’m tired. So I sort-of-cuddled with my brother’s friend, who was a bit more drunk than he was. We spent awhile looking at this really tiny-ass score of Bruckner’s Requiem going “YO MAN DIS IZ BULLSHIT LOOK HOW FUCKIN TINY DESE NOTES ARE LOOK HOW FUCKIN CRAZY DIS CLEF IS LOOK AT DESE WORDS LOOK AT DESE INSTRUMENTS WUT DA FUQ IS GOIN AWWWWWN SHIT MAN”

It was entertaining.

The Mexico City Health Department said the boy lost both eyes and was suffering some leakage of cerebral fluid. He was in intensive care and was listed in guarded condition, but doctors said in a statement that such leakage normally stops by itself and that no brain surgery is planned at the moment. The chief prosecutor for Mexico state, where Nezahualcoyotl is located, said the boy’s mother had apparently urged others to help her mutilate her son in order “to prevent an earthquake and save the world.” Several adults were at the home reciting a prayer, and had apparently been fasting because “the world was going to end,” said Nezahualcoyotl assistant police Chief Samuel Cuevas Monroy, quoting the boy’s grandmother. The mother, identified as Maria del Carmen Rios, 28, reportedly told the boy to close his eyes and when he refused, she decided to gouge them out “to clean them.” Some reported the mother had become incoherent and began shouting “Let’s kill him, to get the Devil out of him,” Neme said. Most of the others present at the time were relatives, including the boy’s aunt and uncle, and authorities said the adults appeared to have been consuming unspecified drugs. This is not an opportunity for you to preach about why atheism itself is awesome. This is not an opportunity for you to put yourself on a pedestal, or a soapbox, and talk about how your lack of association with religion vindicates YOU from all guilt of all violence in the world, or makes you better or smarter in any way. This is not about you being able to feel superior to the people who did this. This is about an act that has permanently damaged a young life. And the fact that some people are willing to take this and use it to essentially make a point about themselves and their moral/intellectual superiority is sickening to me. Nothing can be accomplished by that. Because this is an obscure cult, and especially because it apparently happened under the influence of very potent drugs, making this about the wrongness of religion as a whole is not going to cause anyone to change their beliefs; it’s not going to change the world; it’s not going to change anyone’s perspectives, and it’s too narrow to be evidence for anything. Therefore, it’s only serving to give you an excuse to feel good about yourself for not being involved in it. Personally, I don’t give a fuck why they did it, I think it sucks that it happened at all. Stop trying to promote yourself. At the end of the day, this is about a little boy who had something horrible happen to him, not you. Whoof.

This is horrifying. And frankly, I’m appalled that people are making this about why religion is wrong and atheism is better. I find that not only irrelevant, but incredibly selfish. This is not about why you are so awesome for being an atheist. This is not an opportunity for you to preach about why atheism itself is awesome. This is not an opportunity for you to put yourself on a pedestal, or a soapbox, and talk about how your lack of association with religion vindicates YOU from all guilt of all violence in the world, or makes you better or smarter in any way. This is not about you being able to feel superior to the people who did this. This is about an act that has permanently damaged a young life. And the fact that some people are willing to take this and use it to essentially make a point about themselves and their moral/intellectual superiority is sickening to me.
